改造英語

[師]收集英語句子時，還會遇到一種情況，就是句子形式很好，有學習的價值，可內容卻不適用，比如你們精讀課里有一篇阿瑟·米勒的散文，其中一句是A garden is an extension of oneself and so it has to be anarena where striving does not cease, but continues by other means.翻譯成漢語是“菜園子是個人的延伸，是一個競技場，這里，奮斗不會停息，而是會以其他方式繼續?！边@個句子很好，可惜講的是菜園子，對我們來說用處不大，背得滾瓜爛熟將來也可能用不上，那就需要改造，改成這樣：The small platform in front of my students is an extension of oneself, and so it has to be an arena where striving does not cease, but continues by other means.把“菜園子”改成“三尺講臺”，這對將來要當老師的同學來說就很有用了。

[生]改造英語句子？我以前從來沒做過這樣的事。

[師]改造實際上就是仿造，模仿原句造出新句子來。再比如：I walked alongside my father, clutching his right hand.“我走在父親身邊，緊緊抓著他的右手。”學了這句英語，但將來不一定會原封不動使用它，很可能需要變一變才能適合自己的需要，于是你可以改變一下原句中的詞語：

他走在母親身邊，緊緊抓著她的外套。

He walked alongside his mother, clutching her coat.

小女孩兒走在老師身旁，懷里緊緊抱著一個芭比娃娃。

The little girl walked alongside her teacher, clutching a Barbie doll to her.

我走在擁擠的大街上，雙手緊緊抓住剛撿到的公文包。

I walked in the crowded street, clutching with my two hands the briefcase I just picked up.

[生]這一變，句子的用途就大大擴展了。

[師]英語學習中，有很多內容和我們的生活、工作、環境關系不大，例如我們學的課文中有很多句子講的是美國的事情，如果將來我們不去美國生活，那在中國使用這類句子的機會就很有限。比如這樣一個英語句子：A visit to the slum areas of New York City brought home to me what poverty really means.這是個很有英語特點的句子，含有成語，譯成漢語變化很大：“去了趟紐約的貧民區后，什么是貧窮，我完全明白了”，值得學習?？上г淅镉小凹~約”“貧民區”這樣的字眼，若背下來，將來可能完全用不上，那怎么辦？必須改造一下今后才可能有用。改造并不難，來看這個句子：A visit to my math teacher’s office brought home to me what diligence really means.“去了一趟數學老師的辦公室，什么是勤奮，我完全明白了。”怎么樣，有用多了吧？

[生]這很有意思，我來試試。A visit to Tai Mountain brought home to me what natural majesty really means.“去了一趟泰山，什么是大自然的壯麗，我完全明白了?！痹趺礃?？

[師]很好。但“泰山”英語是Mount Tai。

[生]這么一改造，句子的價值和用處就大大增加了。

[師]這是英語學習上的“舉一反三”。再看個句子：The biggest test of the language melting pot is in the five states where three-quarters of the young newcomers live：California, New York, Florida, Texas and Illinois.這句話講的完全是美國的事，將來很可能沒用處，需要改造?？梢赃@樣改：The biggest test of the educational reform is in the three departments where half of the students are from needy families：Chinese, History and Mathematics.“對這項教育改革的最大考驗是在中文系、歷史系和數學系。這三個系里，一半的學生來自貧困家庭?！痹賮砜匆痪洌篘o matter what their route, young Asian Americans, largely those with Chinese and Korean backgrounds, are setting the educational pace for the rest of America.改造后變成這個內容：No matter what their learning methods, these girl pupils, largely those from rural areas, are setting a good example of“plain living but sound learning”for the rest of the class.“這些女生，特別是來自農村地區的女生，不管用的是什么樣的學習方法，都為班里的其他同學樹立了‘生活儉樸，學習優秀’的榜樣?！边@個句子改得多了一點兒，不過基本句式沒變。

[生]這種改造我覺得太有必要了?；叵脒@四年里學了大量的英語文章、課文，內容絕大部分都是有關西方的，美國的最多。特別是三、四年級的“英美報刊選讀”課，課文講的幾乎都是英美的內容，什么參眾兩院啦、西點軍校啦、鄉村音樂啦、華爾街啦，還有戴安娜王妃什么的。我自己就曾經想過：學這些東西有用嗎？除了增加一些西方文化知識外，在表達能力上有什么幫助呢？將來和誰去談、到哪兒去用這些洋話題呢？

[師]如果不改造，這樣的句子背多少也沒多大用處。我再給你個句子，你改造一下試試：Nowhere has the issue of Asian American student admission been more bitterly fought than at Berkeley.這是個nowhere引導的倒裝句型，有特點，應該學習。

[生]這些年一些體育明星紛紛被一些著名高校接納，引起不少爭議，就以這個為內容改吧：Nowhere has the issue of sport star admission into universities been more hotly debated than in China.怎么樣？

[師]你的聯想力不錯。你把這句話譯成英語試試。

[生]“體育明星被大學錄取的問題沒有比在中國爭論得再激烈了。”

[師]我看這樣更好一些：“大學錄取體育明星的問題在中國爭論得最激烈。”

[生]是，nowhere本身就表達了最高級的意思。

[師]再來看這個句子：Only the gardener is capable of endlessly reviving so much hope that this year, regardless of drought, flood, typhoon, or his own stupidity, he is going to do it right！這句話的漢語翻譯是：“只有種菜的人能夠不斷地讓希望重生，這希望就是：盡管有干旱、洪水、臺風或個人的愚蠢行為這些不利因素，但他今年一定會干好！”你怎么改造？

[生]我要說：Only my girlfriend is capable of endlessly reviving so much hope that this year, regardless of much more difficulties than last year, I am going to succeed in my English study！

[師]那就善待你的女朋友吧。再看一句：Instead, you spent a dull evening in a French music hall with a sloppy fat man who, instead of having messages slipped into his hand by dark eyed beauties, got only an ordinary telephone call making an appointment in his room.漢語譯文是：“然而，你卻在一家法式音樂廳里，和一個衣著邋遢的胖子度過了一個乏味的夜晚。這個胖子沒有得到黑眼睛的美女塞到他手里的紙條，卻接到一個普通的電話，定下一個在他房間的約會。”這句英語，句式很好，可內容限制了用途，你來改造一下。

[生]這樣改如何：Instead, I spent an unforgettable morning in a sunny classroom with our foreign teacher who, instead of scolding me for my mistakes, encouraged me to work harder and to improve my English pronunciation quickly.“然而，我和外教在陽光明媚的教室里度過了一個令人難忘的上午，他非但沒有責備我的錯誤，反而鼓勵我更努力學習，趕快提高英語發音?！?/p>

[師]記得有一次我給學生布置了一個改造句子的作業，改造的對象是歐·亨利的小說《二十年后》里的一個句子：Trying doors as he went, swinging his club with many clever movements, turning now and then to cast his watchful eye down the peaceful street, the officer, with his strongly built form and slight air of superiority, made a fine picture of a guardian of the peace.這個句子很長，改起來很不容易，沒想到有個女生，竟以它為基礎，造出一個描寫黛玉葬花的句子：Trying to forget what happened just now as she walked, bowing to pick up the flower petals on the ground and putting them carefully into the silk bag on her back, wiping now and then the tears in her eyes with a handkerchief, Daiyu, with her slimly built form and slight air of self-pride, made a fine picture of a fairy maiden from the Heaven.

[生]基本架構沒變，但內容變化很大，乍一看，幾乎看不出原句的樣子。

[師]這個女生平時就表現出相當強的漢語能力，我問她，是怎么想到這樣改造的。她說，首先把原句的漢語譯文弄明白，然后根據這個譯文想出一個改變原文內容但句式相似的漢語句子來，最后參照原來的英語句子寫出改造的英語句子。

[生]這是一個好辦法，根據英語句子的漢語譯文來想就容易了。

[師]盡管她這個英語句子還有需要改進的地方，但能做到這一步已經是難能可貴了。

[生]這和做漢譯英差不多了。

[師]比漢譯英要容易，因為句子的構架已經有了，還有一些成語、短語也是現成的，比如上句里的now and then, built form, slight air of, make a fine picture of等。
