5　allowed us to speak aloud

趙Sir：今天談allowed和aloud。

Henry：兩字很易明白，allowed是allow的過去式及過去分詞，指“批準”，aloud是“大聲地”。

趙Sir：對！有沒有興趣用這兩個字來作句？

Henry：有，例如：

Our English teacher allowed us to speak aloud in his lesson when the Principal was on leave.

（在校長放假的日子，我們的英文老師準許我們在他的課堂大聲說話。）

趙Sir：作得好！以下這句頗有趣：

Diabetics should not be allowed to have sweet dreams.

（糖尿病人不準進入甜蜜夢鄉。）

Henry：Sweet dreams是指“熟睡”，但字面意思是“甜夢”，既然是“甜”，糖尿病人自然被禁止進入了！

趙Sir：你一聽便懂有趣之處。言歸正傳！Allowed有“準許、給……機會、預留、接受”等意思，例如：

I'm sorry, sir, but smoking is not allowed.

（先生，對不起，不許抽煙。）

This situation must not be allowed to go on much longer.

（決不允許這種情況繼續存在。）

The children are only allowed to watch television at weekends.

（孩子只獲準在週末看電視。）

This evidence will not be allowed in court.

（這項證據在法庭上不會被接受。）

Henry：Aloud又如何？

趙Sir：Aloud這個副詞（adverb）的意思是“大聲地”，例如：

The teacher would read aloud to the group.

（老師會大聲朗讀給全組聽。）

Henry：其實，老師對我們說，read books aloud（大聲朗讀書本）比silent reading（無聲閱讀）更好，因為前者既可增加我們的集中力，又可增強記憶力。
