親愛的讀者：

我想在這里告訴大家，我寫歷書的目的只有一個：讓公眾受益。不過，說這樣的話，我顯得不夠誠實。現在的人都很聰明，謊話說得再怎樣圓滑，也騙不了他們，還是如實說吧：我沒錢。我老婆是個好女人，不過我批評她說，她有點過于驕傲。她忍無可忍，說她坐在那里忙著紡紗織布，我卻無所事事，瞪大眼睛看星星。她經常威脅我說，如果我再不用我的書和那些破玩意兒（她這樣稱呼我的儀器）去掙點錢，貼補家用，她就把我的書和那些儀器全燒掉。出版商給我的利潤提成還算可以，于是，我就遵照老婆大人的意思，開始寫這本歷書。

其實，如果說只是因為生活所迫的話，那我也許很久以前就不得不出版歷書了。只因為顧及到我的同學和老友泰坦·利茲先生（當時出版歷書的另一人——編者注）的利益，我極不愿意傷害他，不過這一障礙（我十分不情愿用這個詞）馬上就要消失了，因為不懂得敬重美德的冷酷的死神已經做好了準備對利茲先生發動致命的沖刺。死神掏出了他那把毀滅的剪刀，那個天才不久就要離我們而去了。按照他的愿望，我推算他會在1733年10月17日下午3點29分，正好有兩顆星星交匯的時候死去，但按他自己的推測，他會活到當月26日。在過去的9年里，我們每次見面，都會為這一小小的差異爭論不休，不過，后來他終于有些相信我的話了。究竟誰算得準，很快就會見分曉。由于從明年起，這個地方的人們也許再也看不到他的作品了，我想我應該把這一任務承擔起來，也希望得到公眾的鼓勵和幫助。所以，我殷切希望購買這本小書的讀者朋友，能夠既覺得自己不僅是在買一本有用的書，同時又是在做善事，獲益之人將是你貧困的摯友：
