鞘翅目昆蟲是地球上生物多樣性最為豐富的類群，目前已知約40萬種，約占整個地球已記錄生物種類的40%。生態環境的穩定和發展需要生物多樣性的支撐，同時生物多樣性又是人類社會賴以生存和發展最為重要的物質基礎。而人類對生物多樣性的認識始于物種。因此，對物種多樣性的研究、編目是生物多樣性的重要基礎性工作；同時，也是維持生態環境安全、農林生產安全、人類健康和生存安全所必需的工作。

本志經野外標本采集，鑒定鞘翅目昆蟲類群共計36科451屬895種，其中第六卷包含豉甲科3屬5種，步甲科42屬78種，龍虱科4屬7種，牙甲科3屬4種，閻甲科1屬1種，覓葬甲科1屬1種，葬甲科4屬7種，隱翅蟲科25屬91種，糞金龜科2屬3種，皮金龜科1屬1種，鍬甲科14屬37種，金龜科38屬74種，花甲科1屬2種，吉丁科6屬19種，叩甲科22屬33種，紅螢科3屬4種，花螢科2屬7種，郭公蟲科8屬11種，大蕈甲科2屬3種，露尾甲科2屬3種，偽瓢蟲科6屬8種，瓢蟲科8屬23種；第七卷包含花蚤科3屬3種，擬步甲科19屬40種，芫菁科5屬10種，瘦天牛科1屬1種，天牛97屬153種，距甲科2屬5種，葉甲科77屬176種，鐵甲科16屬45種，梨象科2屬2種，卷象科2屬2種，齒顎象科1屬1種，隱頦象科4屬4種，短角象科1屬1種，象蟲科23屬30種。同時，作者對實際研究過的種類作了比較詳細的形態描述，每個種均列有特征、分布、生物學或有關文獻等方面的信息，并編有分屬、分種檢索表。
