2.12 [37] 景公為泰呂成將以〔燕〕饗晏子諫

齊景公鑄成大呂鐘后打算舉行宴飲，晏子進(jìn)諫

【原文】

景公〔為〕泰呂成，謂晏子曰：“吾欲與夫子燕。”對曰：“未祀先君而以燕，非禮也。”公曰：“何以禮為？”對曰：“夫禮者，民之紀(jì)，紀(jì)亂則民失，亂紀(jì)失民，危道也。”公曰：“善。”乃以祀焉。

【今譯】

齊景公鑄成大呂鐘后，對晏子說：“我想和您一起宴飲。”晏子回答說：“沒祭祀先代國君就舉行宴飲，這不合禮法。”景公說：“怎么做才算有禮呢？”晏子回答說：“禮法是約束百姓的綱紀(jì)，綱紀(jì)混亂，百姓就失去了約束，綱紀(jì)混亂百姓離心，這是傾危之道。”景公說：“好。”于是就舉行祭祀。

When the making of the Tailü bell was completed,Duke Jing said to Yanzi: “I w ish to hold a banquet w ith your participation,Master.”

Yanzi answered: “It is a violation of the rites to hold a banquet w ithout performing the proper sacrifice to the former rulers.”

The Duke said: “Why does one have to follow the rites?”

Yanzi answered: “The rites are the basic guidelines of the people. W hen these guidelines fall into disorder,the people are lost. It is a dangerous course to allow the guidelines to fall into disorder and to lose the people.

The Duke said: “Well argued.” Thereupon,he perform ed the appropriate sacrifice.
