Now, it is seven o’clock, and Mommy is ready to start the party. She already told everyone that she wanted the party to start by seven o’clock. Mommy gets all the children together so she can show them how to play a game. This is a game that big children can play, and little children can play, too.
There are a lot of children in the living room now. Pat is counting them all. She is counting them one by one: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Pat is really pleased that so many of her friends came to her party.
Mommy tells everybody to be quiet so she can tell them what to do. Nearly all the children listen carefully. Only one boy is not really listening carefully. One boy is being naughty. That boy is Tom. Tom is not interested in the game.
Tom is only interested in the food everyone can eat when they finish playing games. The other children are very excited because they are not the same as Tom. They are not only interested in food. Those children really love to go to birthday parties and play games.
Grandfather and Grandmother are listening carefully. They are not going to play the game, but they are going to watch Pat and her friends play it. Grandfather knows this game very well.
When Mommy was a little girl, Grandfather showed Mommy how to play the game. He showed the game to his daughter, and now Mommy is showing the same game to her daughter. Maybe later, Pat will have a daughter of her own. Then, she can show this game to her own daughter.
Now, everybody understands how to play this game. Only Tom doesn’t understand how to play the game. He doesn’t understand because he didn’t listen carefully to what Mommy said. Now, the other children will have to show Tom what to do.
I don’t know how to play this game. What do we have to do?
Pat
Didn’t you listen to my mommy? She told everybody what to do.
Tom
I wanted to listen, but I couldn’t hear her.
Pat
Why not? If I could hear her, then I’m sure you could hear her too. I think you just weren’t listening.
Tom
Yes, I was. But some of the children near me were talking. That’s why I couldn’t hear.
Pat
All right, I’ll tell you what we have to do. First, we have to get some chairs.
Tom
How many chairs do we have to get?
Pat
Oh, nineteen or twenty.
Tom
That’s a lot.
Pat
Yes. We have to get that many chairs because there are a lot of children here. We have to get enough chairs so that everyone will have one to sit on.
Tom
How many children are there?
Pat
Twenty.
Tom
How do you know?
Pat
I know because I counted them all. Come on! Let’s get the chairs!
Tom
Oh, it’s all right… your mommy and daddy are getting the chairs. I’m tired. Let’s sit down.
Pat
Oh, Tom! You never want to help. I really don’t know why you came to my birthday party.
Tom
I do. I came because I know there will be a lot of food and a big cake for us to eat. You can’t have a birthday party without lots of food and a big birthday cake!
