Now, it is nearly seven o’clock, and a lot of people are coming to Pat’s house. Other people are there already. Tom is there. He came at five o’clock. All those people are coming to Pat’s birthday party. Now, Pat is waiting for everybody. She is waiting for her party to start.

She’s waiting for everyone in the living room. She’s very excited. We’re nearly ready to start her birthday party.

Grandfather

Oh, good. Here, let me take Pat’s present into the living room. I have it here – in this box. Where can I put it?

Lee

You can put it by the other presents in there. It’s very big. What is it?

Grandfather

Ah, wait and see. Why don’t you take your grandmother into the kitchen? I’m sure she would like a cup of something to drink.

Lee

All right, I’ll do that. Here, give me your bag. I’ll put it away for you.

Grandfather

Thank you, Lee.

Lee

Go on Grandfather… tell me what you bought Pat for her birthday. Is it some kind of toy?

Grandfather

No, it isn’t. It isn’t a toy. It’s something she can take to school. It’s something that can help her with her schoolwork.

Lee

Oh, I know – it’s a schoolbag. It’s a bag for her to put her books, pens, pencils, erasers and rulers in.

Grandfather

No, it isn’t. And I’m not going to tell you what it is. You’ll just have to wait and see like Pat.

Lee

All right, Grandfather. Where’s Grandmother? I’ll take her into the kitchen now and get her a cup of something to drink.

Grandfather

Thank you, Lee. I’m pleased we came here in time for the start of the party. Pat is not the only one who is excited – I’m excited, too.
