Nowadays, the number of Chinese students going abroad in pursuit of higher education has been increasing steadily.¹ Studying abroad is fun, exciting and life-changing, but it is also filled with challenges.²

Firstly³, studying abroad can be costly, especially in terms of college tuition and the cost of living. When one lives on a stringent budget, his or her quality of life will slip away. Secondly³, adapting to a different culture can be very difficult. Many overseas students meet with language weakness and poor adaptability to foreign environments, which are barriers when they participate in various college activities. Lastly³, studying abroad isn’t the ticket to a good job. Many college students optimistically think that having an overseas diploma can help them find a decent job. However, remarkable capacity for work is what employers value more.

Therefore, think twice before deciding to go abroad.⁴ Going abroad is not the only way to expand future career opportunities.⁵

【譯文】

如今，出國留學深造的中國學生的數量一直在穩步增長。留學是有趣的、令人興奮的、可以改變人生的，但是也充滿挑戰。

首先，留學會很昂貴，尤其是大學學費和生活開銷方面。如果一個人的生活捉襟見肘，他/她的生活品質將不復存在。其次，適應不同的文化會非常困難。許多留學生都會遭遇語言劣勢以及難以適應國外環境的情況，這些都是留學生參加各種各樣的大學活動時的障礙。最后，留學并不是通往好工作的直通票。許多大學生樂觀地認為，擁有國外文憑就可以幫助他們找到一份體面的工作。然而，出眾的工作能力才是雇主更加看重的。

因此，在決定留學之前一定要三思。留學并非拓寬未來職業機會的唯一途徑。

【要點用法】

【句法點評】

1．Many overseas students meet with language weakness and poor adaptability to foreign environments, which are barriers when they participate in various college activities.

本句為復合句，which引導定語從句，修飾先行詞language weakness and poor adaptability，when引導時間狀語從句。poor adaptability意為“糟糕的適應性”，引申翻譯為“難以適應……”。

2．Lastly, studying abroad isn’t the ticket to a good job.

本句使用了the ticket to...這一固定表達，原本意為“通往……的車票”，該表達中介詞to后面一般要接表示具體目的地的名詞，而本句中to的賓語是a good job，是一個抽象概念，用在此處是一種形象化的說法。和寫漢語作文一樣，寫英語作文時恰當使用比喻、擬人等修辭手法，可以使語言變得更加形象生動，讓人眼前一亮。

3．Therefore, think twice before deciding to go abroad.

句中使用了諺語think twice，短小精悍，言簡意賅，作為結尾段落的總結，給結尾段落增色不少。
