Tune: Green Willow Twigs
—Written at the Law School Library in the White Building of
Peking University, Shatan Section, 1951
The sea of study is boundless,
Good books free in abundance,
Whence the time for idleness?
In tranquility divine as such,
Quietly and alone I read, when
Autumn fills the blue vastness.
Thought bound, night finds me sleepless,
Then and now, plenty are men of excellence.
Each has his own specialty,
But with a smattering cut short early,
Falling prey to regrets endless.
Note:
Beginning from the new semester of 1951, with the exception of freshmen, senior students (sophomores, third and fourth grades and graduate students) as well as most teachers in the literary sciences went to Guangxi on account of the land reform movement. As a result, only a few students were studying at the Law School Library.
