Thea Render
There are an incredible number of rendering applications and plugins out there that range from professional high-end renderers to small experimental one-man projects. Technologies range from physically based radiosity engines to gaming platforms, and then, you have to decide how tightly you want your renderer integrated into SketchUp. A strong integration usually means sacrifices in render options or quality.
To help you choose the perfect renderer for your requirements, we have prepared a short and noncomprehensive list of the currently available renderers at the end of the book. By the time you have read the rendering chapters in this book, the entire technobabble will make complete sense; we promise.
Why use Thea Render?
Although it is relatively new among the SketchUp render extensions, we have chosen Thea Render for this book for several reasons:
- It is a mid-priced product but also has a free trial version available. If you decide to buy it (after testing), you won't have to apply for a bank loan to get the full version.
- It has a biased and unbiased render engine for the fast rendering of animation frames and simple high-quality photo-real still images.
- It comes as an integrated plugin as well as a fully featured standalone studio application.
- It is under active development and is constantly evolving.
- There are plenty of other features that will keep you busy experimenting, long after you have mastered the basics of image rendering.
- Last but not least, Thea is written by the same developer team that created Kerkythea. These guys know what they are doing.
Installing Thea Studio
Begin by downloading the Thea Studio installer from the Thea Render website at http://www.thearender.com.
On Windows, just double-click the installer and follow the steps of the setup wizard. Make a note of the data location folder. This folder will contain the materials and resources that we will need later on in the book.
On a Mac, double-click on the disk image (*.dmg
) file. Finder will show the contents of the file. Select Thea.app
and drag it into your Applications
folder. Open Applications and double-click on the new Thea.app
file. Now, you will be prompted to choose or confirm the data location folder. Afterwards, the Thea Studio application will start.
Installing the Thea for SketchUp plugin
The Thea for SketchUp plugin installer is provided as a setup wizard that does not require the usual extension installation method, as shown in the following steps:
- Download the plugin from the website's download section. Look for the SketchUp Plugin link in the sidebar to the right, and download the installer.
- Close SketchUp if you have it open.
- Double-click on the installer file to start the setup wizard.
- Follow the steps through.
- If you have more than one edition of SketchUp installed, you can install the plugin for all the versions at the same time.
- Open SketchUp and confirm that the Plugins menu now shows a submenu for Thea Render.
Downloading bonus content
As a licensed user, you have the opportunity to download additional materials to use in your renderings. To gain access to the content, you need a user account for the Thea Render forums:
- Sign up for a user ID at http://www.thearender.com/forum. Sign up with the same e-mail address you used to buy your Thea license.
- Send an e-mail to
<license@thearender.com>
(again, from the same e-mail account). Add your forum nickname, and ask to be added to the Licensed User Club. - When your club membership is confirmed, you can access the forum with links to the additional downloads.
- On the Thea website, navigate to Resources | Libraries.
- Follow the Download link for each library to the forum post. From the links in the post, you can download a compressed archive of the library.
- Extract the library after the download. You will get a
*.lib.thea
file. - Double-click on the
*.lib.thea
file to start the Thea library installer. - The Install Library dialog will prompt you to confirm the data folder and accept the license. Click on the check button to complete the installation.
- Repeat steps 5 to 8 for each library you want to install. The Install Library dialog that appears while installing the Brick Walls library is shown in the following screenshot:
To make your new Thea materials available in SketchUp, perform the following steps:
- Download the Material Libraries in SKM format item from the libraries.
- Extract the
*.zip
file. - On Windows, copy the individual material folders into the
C:\Program Files\SketchUp\SketchUp 2014\Materials\Thea Materials
application folder. You will already find folders for the Thea standard materials that have been created by the Thea installation. - On Mac, you can copy the folders either in your user specific library path,
Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2014/SketchUp/Materials
, or in the system-wide folder,/Applications/SketchUp 2014/SketchUp.app/Contents/Resources/Content/Materials
. In this second location, the materials will also be available for other users on your computer.
Now, you have all the first-class materials available in SketchUp. These materials will translate to high-quality materials in Thea.
