9　up in arms, live on alms

趙Sir：今天介紹另一對同音異義字：arms和alms。

Henry：Arms和alms的意思有何不同？

趙Sir：完全兩回事。Arm是“手臂”，例如：

I put my arm around his shoulders.

（我摟住他的雙肩。）

不過，arms卻指“武器、軍火”，例如：

We should boycott countries that sell arms to terrorists.

（我們應杯葛把軍火賣給恐怖份子的國家。）

Henry：有沒有與arms搭配的片語（phrase）？

趙Sir：以下三個便是：

Lay down arms是“停止戰鬥”，例如：

The President appealed to the rebels to lay down arms.

（總統呼籲叛軍停止戰鬥。）

Take up arms是“開始戰鬥”，例如：

Minority tribes took up arms against the new government.

（少數民族部落拿起武器開始與新政府作戰。）

Up in arms是“憤慨的”，例如：

Residents are up in arms about the closure of the local library.

（當地圖書館關閉使居民很不滿。）

Henry：如果學校關閉圖書館，我也不滿。Alms又如何？

趙Sir：Alms是“佈施、施捨”（money, food, clothes given to poor people），《聖經》如是說：

When thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.

（佈施時，不要讓左手知道右手做些甚麼。）

英國政治家Edmund Burke（埃德蒙?伯克）這樣說：To drive men from independence to live on alms, is itself great cruelty.

（把人從獨立趕往依賴救濟金維生，是非常殘酷的。）
