二、 用英文數詞還是阿拉伯數字

? 一般來說，從0到10（0 through 10）的數字用英文字拼寫出來，尤其是這個數字修飾名詞時。

◇ I would like to have ten copies of your book report. 你的讀書報告，我想要10份。

? 10以上（above 10）的數字常用阿拉伯數字，但如果用英文拼寫出來時只有一個或兩個詞（twenty-three、seventy-one 等算一個詞），也可以用英文數詞。

12 players=twelve players 12名運動員（一個詞）

2，000 volunteers=two thousand volunteers 2000名志愿者（兩個詞）

◇ About 260 people attended the reception for Mary and Mike Brown. 大約260人出席了瑪麗和邁克·布朗的婚宴。

數字拼寫出來若超過兩個詞，通常要用阿拉伯數字，不用英語數詞（two hundred and sixty）。

◇ We sent out 200 invitations to our wedding and have already received ninety acceptances.

We sent out two hundred invitations to our wedding and have already received ninety acceptances.

We sent out 200 invitations to our wedding and have already received 90 acceptances.

我們發出了200份婚禮邀請函，已經收到了90份要來參加婚禮的回信。

需要保持風格一致，一個句子里不要混合阿拉伯數字（200）和英文數詞（ninety）。

? 句首的數字一定要用英文拼寫出來。

◇ Twenty-two people were injured in yesterday’s bus accident. 昨天的公交車事故中有22人受傷。

◇ 187 copies of my resume were sent out last month.

I sent out 187 copies of my resume last month.

上月我寄出了187份履歷。

如果數字拼寫出來需要兩個以上的詞（如one hundred and eighty-seven），最好用阿拉伯數字，不用英文數詞，但不能把阿拉伯數字置于句首，這時需要改變句型，如上面的正確句。

◇ Informal： 2013 was a very good year for us.

Formal： We had a very good year in 2013.

2013年我們過得很好。

年份必須用阿拉伯數字，但正式英語中不要置于句首。

◇ 27.5 degrees centigrade was yesterday’s temperature.

Yesterday’s temperature was 27.5 degrees centigrade.

昨天的溫度是27.5攝氏度。

小數點必須用阿拉伯數字表示，但不能置于句首。

? 數字如果修飾的是測量單位（如inch、foot、meter、kilometer、kilogram等）和時間（如minute、hour、year等），常用阿拉伯數字（包括從1到10的小數字）。

◇ A high shipping rate is charged on packages over 3 kg. 超過3千克的包裹要支付高海運費。

【注】 如果不含技術意義（no technical significance），也可以用英文數詞。

◇ Mary has gained three kilograms this month. 瑪麗這個月體重增加了3千克。

? 當名詞（如 inch、year等）充當形容詞，修飾另一個名詞時，在數詞和這類作形容詞的名詞之間要用連字號，而且這類作形容詞的名詞要用單數形式。

? 表示小數（decimals）、分數（fractions）、百分比（percentages，符號是“%”）要用阿拉伯數字。表示比賽的得分（scores）、財物狀況（finances）、比例、日期、金錢、時刻（a.m.， p.m. 之前）等也要用阿拉伯數字。

注意：表示測量單位的縮寫詞（如oz、in、cm等）總是單數形式（如1 oz、10 oz等）。

◇ Our basketball team won the final game by a score of 110 to 98. （得分）

◇ Tickets to the art museum cost $15 apiece. （財物）

? 日期和年份（dates and years）要用阿拉伯數字。書面語中，日期不要用序數詞，但讀時，可以用序數詞。

◇ They were married on August15，2013. ［讀作 August （the） fifteenth， two thousand thirteen］

? 當一個數字跟在另一個數字后面時，不要都用阿拉伯數字，通常把小一點的數字用英文拼寫出來。

◇ Amy teaches English to30second-grade students. 艾咪教30名二年級小學生英語。

◇ There were6four-foot-tall robotic dinosaurs in my backyard. 在我的后院有6個4英尺高的機器恐龍。

◇ I need three100-watt light bulbs for my apartment. 我需要給我的公寓買3個100瓦的燈泡。
