JohnHarrisRogers(1863-1930)servedinTexaslawenforcementformorethanfourdecades,asaTexasRanger,DeputyandU.S.Marshal,citypolicechief,andintheprivatesectorasasecurityagent.Heisrecognizedinhistoryasoneofthelegendary"FourCaptains"oftheRangerforcethathelpedmakethetransitionfromtheFrontierBattaliondaysintothetwentiethcentury,yetnoonehasfullyresearchedandwrittenabouthislife.PaulN.Spellmannowpresentsthefirstfull-lengthbiographyofthisenigmaticman.DuringhisyearsasaRanger,RogersobservedandparticipatedinthecivilizingofWestTexas.Astherailroadsmovedoutinthe1880s,townsgrewuptooquickly,lawlessnesswastherule,andtheRangersweresooncalledintoestablishorder.Rogerswasnearlyalwaysthere.LikewiseheparticipatedinsomeofthemostdramaticandsignificanteventsduringtheclosingyearsoftheFrontierBattalion:theBrownCountyfencecuttingwars;theEastTexasConnerFight;theElPaso/LangtryPrizefight;theriotsduringtheLaredoQuarantine;andthehuntsforHillLoftisandGregorioCortez.RogerswasthelawmanwhocapturedCorteztocloseoutoneofthemostinfamouschasesinTexashistory.UnlikethemoregregariousBillMcDonald,CaptainRogershadaquietmannerthatkepthimfromthepubliclimelight;nevertheless,he,JohnBrooks,andJohnHughessharedthesameexperiencesasMcDonaldduringthealmosttwodecadestheyledtheRangercompanies.UniquetoRogers'careerwashisdevoutChristianfaiththatwasondisplayonalmostalloccasions.RogerswaswonttousetheBibleasoftenashissix-gun,bothwithdramaticeffect.Thatandhisconstantdevotiontohisfamilysethimapartfromtheusuallawmenofthatera.HewasamanofthelawandamanofGod,ararecombinationattheturnofthecentury.
