【范文評注】

There is a saying which goes that “Never go out there to see what happens, go out there to make things happen.” Those who did something great and go down in history, ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign, are all doers rather than onlookers. A telling example is Thomas Edison.Without his continuous experiments, he would not have invented so many devices that have greatly influenced people's life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and of course, the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.

However, nowadays it is common to see people just stand aside and keep complaining but be reluctant to participate. In terms of environmental protection, for instance, many people living in big cities complain that the frequent heavy haze pollution messes them up.But they still drive their private cars to destinations rather than taking public transportation.Another case is that some people admire others' firm abdominal muscles but refuse to take regular exercises.

In a word, if we don't take action, nothing will happen.So let's just go out there to make things happen now.

【譯文】

有句諺語說：“永遠不要去圍觀，去讓事情發生吧。”古今中外，那些有偉大成就、名垂青史的人都是行動派，而不是圍觀者。托馬斯·愛迪生就是一個活生生的例子。如果不是持續不斷地做實驗，他就不會發明包括留聲機、電影攝影機，當然還有持久、實用的電燈泡這么多給世界帶來深遠影響的裝置了。

然而，現在人們只是袖手旁觀、不停抱怨，卻不愿參與行動的情況屢見不鮮。舉個例子，說到環境保護，很多生活在大城市的人都抱怨頻繁出現的重度霧霾給他們造成了困擾。但是他們卻仍然去哪兒都開私家車，而不是搭乘公共交通工具。還有個例子，有些人羨慕別人結實的腹肌，卻拒絕進行有規律的鍛煉。

總之，如果我們不行動起來，什么事情都不會發生。那么現在我們就行動起來讓事情發生吧。

【句法點評】

1.Those who did something great and go down in history, ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign, are all doers rather than onlookers.

本句包含一個who引導的定語從句，先行詞為Those, 所以系動詞用的是are；ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign是插入語。

2.Without his continuous experiments, he would not have invented so many devices that have greatly influenced people's life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and of course, the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.

本句含有一個含蓄條件句的虛擬語氣，without意思是“要不是，如果不是，沒有”，并且說的是過去的事情，所以主句用的是would have done的形式，表示“如果不是當時……，就不會有現在的結果”。
