A Wandering Tour to Tangut

重回西夏的旅行

Pang's narrative cartoon

——龐萬福西夏連環畫解讀

The British Library owns one of the largest collections of Tangut manuscripts in the world，which I am in charge of. They were excavated by Sir Marc Aurel Stein from Karakhoto，Inner Mongolia in 1903. And a large number of Tangut silk paintings also from Karakhoto were collected at the British Museum. However，it has been so intriguing for me to see the narrative cartoons on Tangut warring events for the first time in life. I have to say，Pang's artwork is original in the field of the International Tangut Studies.

大英圖書館擁有世界上最豐富的西夏文獻經卷藏品之一，我很榮幸是這批藏品的負責人。這些西夏文獻，是1903年匈牙利裔探險家斯坦因在內蒙古黑水城遺址挖掘所獲得的。同時，倫敦的大英博物館藏有同樣來自黑水城的西夏絹畫。但是讓我感到新鮮的是，作為一名西夏學家，我還是平生第一次看到西夏戰事連環畫。我不禁要說，龐萬福先生的藝術創作，在國際西夏學領域具有原創價值。

Pang is a tall and sturdy man，with eyes in depth. His colleagues at school found he hardly speaks.Ironically，Pang's artistic language is marvelous.

龐高大壯實，眼窩微陷。在學校教書的同事們，發現龐生性溫和沉默。讓大家吃驚的是，從龐筆下流出的藝術語言，卻令人目不暇接。

Pang is an expert of fabricating; hence one can always find some fabulous connotations in his cartoons. He conjectures Tangut warring scenes in some childish views，thus keeps his youth in a twinkling. Pang leads us a wandering tour，to glimpse an eagle flying over the wounded soldiers，and a plump horse rear jumping over the gorge，or a sword with an enemy's chopped head hanging on. It is a time capsule，for a long-missing dynasty.

看來龐十分擅長編織故事，在他的連環畫里常常有寓言式的閃光。他在鋪陳西夏戰爭場面時，總帶有兒童般的視角，天真爛漫。龐帶著我們開始一場時空穿越旅行，瞥見戰場上空盤旋啄人的老鷹，正跳躍峽谷的戰馬肥臀，還有劍上滴血的敵酋頭顱。千年前湮滅的王朝，在此瞬間凝結成琥珀。

The most prominent feature of Pang's style is expressing his emotion via figures，that is，he draws the figures of Tangut warriors to describe his inner world. Therefore，his art works should also be regarded as the soliloquy of his heart，not only a narrative cartoon on Tangut warring history. Time is elapsing during wars，while there appears the core of his cartoons，which is the precocious comprehension on destiny，and the melancholy of lost during the intensive life.

龐氏連環畫風格的最大特點是借人物畫抒懷。他創作西夏連環畫，通過塑造人物，來表達自己對于人性人情的理解。所以說龐的藝術創作，從表面說是一部西夏戰事連環畫，更深層說是龐的心靈獨白。戰火紛飛，人生苦短，是整部連環畫的核心主題，藝術家對于命運的捉弄不免感傷，更有澄澈的反思。

Pang has the consciousness of composition before he begins，and then combines means of traditional outline drawing and stone engraving with principles of fork print. He has made his art style unique. To archive further，he has to pass through a long，lonely path. But obviously he has a bright future after that.

龐下筆之前，胸有成竹，糅合了中國白描，金石篆刻和鄉土年畫的線條。他的風格是獨特的。要成大器，他必須走一條長長的獨木橋。但是他的藝術前景將是光明的。
