Time for action - animating the male character
The sequence of events will start with setting the beer down.
- Select the male character.
- Select the Beer in the character's hand.
- Right-click on Beer iProp and choose Operate | Put to place the beer back on the handrail of the porch.
What just happened?
We used the Beer iProp right click menu to trigger the built-in character motion to put down the beer. The Beer iProp goes back to the original place it was located before we had the character pick it up in an earlier chapter. This is how the script driven action knew where to place the beer.

We now need to turn the character towards the grill. In many cases some would actually animate the turn with a full screenshot showing the character twisting at the hips, but we are going to use a half screenshot that shows only the actors upper torso. In the next action section we will then rotate the character, which is a much easier task. This is using the camera to mask the lack of some difficult animation.
Tip
How far do we go in animating a sequence of events?
In animation it's not so much mimicking or reproducing a sequence of events as it is giving the viewers the impression that action or movement happened. Judicious use of camera angles and key framed movement can go a long way towards selling the audience on an event without actually animating the entire event.
Keep it simple when possible.
While we know that the body twists and other motions will be made when a person turns towards an object do we necessarily have to animate all that? Why not frame the camera angle tightly and key frame a simple turn using the Rotation tool instead of getting bogged down in the tedious work of key framing individual limbs which could take hours?
If that is what it takes to sell that scene then by all means animate the entire movement with full body camera angles, but in our case we just need a simple movement to accomplish our task. Never sell your screenshot by taking the easy way out that would hurt quality, but also look for ways to accomplish your task without getting bogged down in too much work. Creativity can plummet when animating too many details becomes a tedious chore.
