Time for action - lighting up the grill
To add light to the outdoor grill, we will use a point light:
- Click or turn on Point Light 1.
- Select the grill in the Scene Navigator or click on the grill prop.
The following screenshot shows the grill pop:
- Press the Home button on the top toolbar to move our camera focus to the grill.
- With Point Light 1 selected, use the Link To feature in the right menu to link the light to the grill.
- Click the Link To button and select the Grill Bottom and also select Position and Rotation. Click on OK.
- Select the Rotate tool from the top menu and rotate the light into its upright position.
- Change the color to orange, set the range to 150, and click the Decay box.
- Use the gizmos or direct manipulation to place the light within the grill prop.
What just happened?
We added a nice warm orange glow to the area around the grill by placing and linking an orange light, to the grill. The following image shows before and after placing the point light near the grill:

The distance the camera is away from the house prop will determine how your scene atmospherics look. Too close and the scene will wash out with too much bright light. Pull the camera back and you should have a nicely lit scene with shadows and sunlight, bathing sections of the house, and other parts of the scene.
Bravo! You have taken a plain, daylight scene, and added character and mood with lighting and atmospherics. Just imagine what you can do in a dark scene with spotlights and point lights if you can improve a daylight scene this much! The next image shows the project to this point:
