Time for action - building a gazebo without hand tools!
- Save your project and open a new iClone blank project.
- Double-click to load an iClone character/avatar for size reference. In this case, we used the Dylan character.
- Double-click to load
Cylinder_001
from the top folder of the 3D blocks under the Set tab and Prop button. Set the x and y scales to 550 and the z scale to 5.The following image shows the flattened cylinder:
- Load
Box_001
and set the scale to 15, 15, 246. This will be our post to hold the roof. Select the top view, as shown in the next image, in the top toolbar and hold Ctrl while dragging the mouse to a location for the second post: - With post selected, hold down the Ctrl key and drag the newly created post across the floor from the original post as demonstrated in the next image:
Tip
Quick Copy for props and selecting multiple props
You can select any prop, press the Ctrl key, and then drag the prop over with either direct manipulation or the gizmos. A copy of the prop you are dragging will be automatically created when you move the prop.
To select multiple props, hold down the Ctrl key while selecting the props directly or clicking on the props in the Scene Manager. You can then duplicate this multiple selection of props by holding down the Ctrl key and dragging them as described previously. This is a real-time saver when creating props from the building blocks.
- Select both posts and use the rotate tool as shown in the next image while holding down the Ctrl button to create more posts. Repeat this process until you are satisfied with the results.
- Select each post and click on the Attach button in the left panel for each post. Click on Pick Parent and select the cylinder as the prop that you want to attach to. Do this for each post till all posts are attached to the cylinder. When you select the cylinder, all of the attached posts will be selected along with it.
- Change back to the front view in the same manner you changed to the top view.
- Double-click on Cone_006 to load it into the scene and set the scale to 670, 670, 100.
- Move the roof (Cone_006) to sit on top of the posts. You can then adjust the roof match to your preferences.
- Attach the roof to the cylinder using the Pick Parent button under Attach.
- Save the newly created gazebo prop by selecting the Custom tab under Props and clicking the Plus button at the bottom of the Content Manager in the left menu.
The next image shows the newly created gazebo prop:

We will texture the prop with wood after we load the prop into the scene that we are building.
What just happened?
We created a gazebo by using the Move, Rotate
, and Clone
features to quickly and efficiently create parts of the prop. This prop is now available for texturing and can be used for future projects too.
Tip
Save the project file when creating a building block prop
When you spend time creating a prop from building blocks it would be a good idea to start with an empty project and save that project when completed for future use. This will allow us to save our work for future use should we need anything similar for a future project.
