Sally's views on authenticity

Sally Eaves: Authenticity is key, absolutely. You can, of course, still work for a specific organization and be very authentic, but I do like being able to offer a broader view of the tech industry, experience from a deep cross-sector network, and independent thought leadership.

This can help and guide companies for the dynamic future of work and bring together research and practice in cutting-edge tech, skills development, and impact. I really enjoy working with organizations on a range of exciting projects, especially bringing together digital transformation and societal transformation opportunities. I believe this is the authentic future of good business.

Geertjan Wielenga: Could you say a little more about your foundation?

Sally Eaves: Yes, with pleasure! Aspirational Futures brings together eight years of different projects around the world. Our three core pillars for change are STEAM learning, social impact at scale, and "tech for good."

We're truly international in approach but it's important to note that even in our own hometowns, there can often be such disparities in equality and access to opportunities. We're aiming for 5,000 hubs in three years and I'm looking for ambassadors across the world. This is so close to my heart. If you're reading this and want to be involved, just shout!

Geertjan Wielenga: As you travel a lot with your work, do you have any tips for dealing with that?

Sally Eaves: To be honest, by now I should be able to sleep on planes, but I've never mastered that! Many of my friends maximize the time for sleeping, but I typically use flying time as writing time. It's amazing how much you can get done in the air and by resisting connecting to in-flight Wi-Fi. I recommend that digital-switch-off time for thinking, writing, music, and so on—whatever is your passion.

Geertjan Wielenga: Do you ever encounter any technical issues when you're speaking in another country?

Sally Eaves: It has never really been an issue. In some countries, language translation tools are part of a session, so you need to take extra care with delivery speed. Of course, I do use decks to support presentations, but they are very much a backdrop and not a necessity if the connection was to drop, for example.

I am a passionate speaker and expressive on stage—I really want an audience to feel part of it all. So, yes, ironically, for a tech person, I don't rely on the tech! I'm less about slides and more about the engagement and the experience. I like to make topics accessible, encourage curiosity, give tangible examples, and showcase the "why." I believe this human side of tech, and the purpose behind what we're building, has never been more important.

Geertjan Wielenga: Thank you, Sally Eaves.
