Chapter 3. Modeling Groups and Systems

Modeling IT infrastructure is a key precursor to passive management of data center services. In previous chapters, we discussed the complexities of managing a data center in any large enterprise. We then looked at some of the modeling concepts that can be used to bridge the gap between the business and the IT operations. We subsequently introduced the OEM Grid Control as a product that can provide some of these functionalities. Moving on, this chapter will showcase the OEM capabilities in IT infrastructure management. OEM offers capabilities to model IT infrastructure as systems and groups. This chapter will emphasize the modeling of the various flavors of group targets. It will also cover the salient aspects of systems modeling.

After covering the modeling aspects, the chapter will move in the direction of monitoring these targets. The latter part of this chapter will focus on various monitoring capabilities of group and system targets within OEM Grid Control.
