During the Song Dynasty all scholars had to take a national exam held yearly.Those who passed were offered high positions in the army，bringing honor to their family name.One clever and witty scholar named Sun Shan prepared to take this important exam in town．As he was ready to leave，one of his neighbors asked Sun Shan to take his son into town to take the exam.His neighbor was worried about his son，as he was young.The two of them journeyed into town and took the exam.Afterwards Sun Shan and his neighbor's son returned home to wait for the results．One day Sun Shan heard that the results of the exam were posted up，he immediately ran to check his results and saw that he came last.He also checked the result of his neighbor's son only to discover his name was not posted which meant he had failed the exam.Sun Shan returned home，on his way he bumped into his neighbor who asked him about the results of his son.Sun Shan did not want to be flank and disappoint his neighbor，so he spoke out a poem that said，“Sun Shan was last.your son came after that.”His neighbor understood.From then on，people would use Sun Shan's witty poem to decribe thn thse who failed in the exam.
