畢業于北京大學中文系。原為北京語言學院教授，1989年赴美，先后在衛斯理學院、麻省理工學院、哈佛大學教授中文。主要從事現代漢語語法，特別是對外漢語教學語法研究。近年編寫了多部對外漢語教材。主要著作有《實用現代漢語語法》（合作）、《趨向補語通釋》《漢語語法論集》等，對外漢語教材有《中文聽說讀寫》（主編）、《走進中國百姓生活——中高級漢語視聽說教程》（合作）等。

夏威夷大學博士，美國中文教師學會前任會長，加州大學戴維斯分校中文部主任，語言學系博士生導師。兼任多所大學的客座教授或特聘教授，多家學術期刊編委。曾在北京語言大學和斯坦福大學任教多年。

筆名向婭，中國記者協會會員，中國作家協會會員。主要作品有報告文學集《二十四人的性愛世界》《國際航線上的中國空姐》《國際航線上的奇聞秘事》等，電視藝術片《凝固的情感》《希望之光》等。多部作品被改編成廣播劇、電影、電視連續劇，獲各類獎項多次。
