句型“On（the）one hand……，on the other（hand）……”是表示增補的并列句型，此句型通常指一個事物的兩個方面。翻譯為“一方面……，另一方面……”。

能夠表達一個事物的兩個方面的還有句型“……two……，the one……，and the other……”“the former……，the latter……”。例如：There are two fundamental requirements in writing a composition：the one is concentrating on the people, time and place, and the other is catching the details of the matter.寫作文的基本要求有兩個，一是要抓住事情的人物、時間、地點，二是要抓住事情的細節(jié)。
