《地理的故事》撰成于1932年，幾個月內在美國即銷售近14萬冊，一年間始終居“非虛構作品”銷量之最。英國版首發(fā)13萬8千冊，另有德文、西班牙文、意大利文、匈牙利文、葡萄牙文、瑞典文等版本面世，銷量無法統(tǒng)計，被視為人類出版史上之“奇跡”。1933年，此書被引進中國，當年就出了三種中文譯本，此后《地理的故事》又不斷被重譯出版，還沒有哪一部地理著作，擁有如此眾多的中國讀者……
